SMILE DESIGN

Smile design is a complex art of smile form, tooth form, color, tooth position, esthetic goals, material qualities, and technique.  As an example, at the bottom of the page are a list of considerations for composite restoration.

BLEACHING

Tiny holes in the enamel of teeth collect stains from coffee, tea, soda, and other foods.  Bleaching is a technique that cleans teeth to make them whiter.  Bleach is placed in custom made trays, put in the mouth and left in place for one hour.  The process is repeated for several weeks to obtain maximum results.  Bleaching works well on yellow teeth but has limited results on gray teeth.

Bleaching will change color of tooth structure but will not change the color of existing fillings, crowns or other restorations.  Replacement of restorations may be required for an esthetic result.

COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS

Composite is a resin based materials similar to most plastics.  It is used to restore small defects in teeth. Composite has limited strength to resist forces that cause fracture, therefore, it is limited to areas where tooth structure supports it or where forces are small.

The photograph below shows the versatility of the material to restore a fractured tooth on a fourteen year old patient.  The tooth will require a crown when the patient is older.

Notice the ability to texture the surface for proper light reflection and to use intricate color matching as seen with the white spot used to match the adjacent tooth.

Composite is added to straighten teeth.

PORCELAIN VENEERS

Porcelain veneers are small porcelain chips.  Porcelain veneers are used to change tooth color, position and shape.  The teeth are slightly reduced in size and porcelain veneers that are custom made at a laboratory are bonded on them.  The case to the left combines porcelain veneers on the upper teeth and bleaching on the lower teeth

SINGLE PORCELAIN CROWN

Porcelain crowns surround all surfaces of teeth.  Teeth are reduced in size by one to two millimeters and a porcelain crown that is similar to a thimble slides onto a tooth and is bonded to the tooth.

The left central incisor required a root canal, post build up and an all porcelain crown to replicate the right central incisor.
